Make any space your own

Being unable to paint, put down carpet or re-tile puts a cramp on your decorating style. That doesn't mean that you can't turn a flatshare into a cozy oasis. Renting and moving may limit you, but it shouldn't stop you.

Use your favourite things

If you like books, stuffed animals, sports memorabilia or anything, you should have some evidence of it in your personal living space. Always display the things that make you happy. Imagine a stranger walking into the space and think of the room as telling them, without words, what the most important things in your life are.

Add colour with accessories

So, you can't paint, but you can still use colour. With posters, pillows, candles, throws and other objects, you can immerse yourself in your favorite hue.

Consider all of your senses

Smell is a part of decorating. People ignore it because you can't see it in magazines, but no matter how pretty, spacious and expensive a room is, the first thing you notice is what it smells like. Scent is the strongest sense to memory. This fact is important for the decorating nomad. Using the right candle or air freshener, you can bring all of your memories to a space.

Don't forget the people you love

At a thousand words apiece, pictures speak to you and let you know that you are home. It isn't just photos of family and friends, it's also your favourite art prints, paintings that inspire you and posters of your favorite musicians and sporting heroes. If you are concerned about holes in the wall, there are plenty of different hanging methods.

The good thing about flatsharing is that it teaches you to be resourceful. You come to learn that it's not the objects that makes a room beautiful to you. It's the things you can't see: the moods and memories that coluor, texture and scent can evoke.
